Visual Journal: Initial Brainstorming - Study Task 4

Today, in class I began to think about my quote and the writers that I am looking at and how I could translate the arguments visually. I really struggled at first to understand how it was possible to respond visually to a debate about which art form has more status. However, after Pete gave me the example of representing status using scale and layout lots of ideas flowed out on how I could represent the many different layers to my arguments.

Some of my ideas:

  • Playing around with scale and building a hierarchy between the different art forms (collage)
  • Playing with Fine art's interest in form for the sake of form in contrast to commercial art's interest in clear communication and purpose (line and shape)
  • Looking at the move in taste away from fine art toward commercial art (line)
  • Looking at how fine art is considered intellectual and commercial art is not (shape)
  • Looking at how the artist in general is considered an outsider, often being depicted as a clown (shape)
